The Train Ride

The Train Ride

Short ride to nowhere.

Okay, my husband and sister-in-law had their laptops with them.  Every hotel we stayed at had wireless Internet service.  They got on the laptops and checked email and read the newspapers.  Well, it also proved helpful in finding information about some of the place we wanted to go.  Dora got online and found the website for the train ride we were going on the following day.  She got prices and the time it was leaving.

We raided the continental buffet.  We had hot coffee, muffins and fresh fruit for breakfast.

We had a very enjoyable 3 hour ride which went out of Santa Fe and then reversed itself and backup all the way back to town.  We ended up in a car with window that pushed up.  It was nice and cool inside the train excellent for reading.  We took sodas, snacks and I took a book to read.  A soon as we left the train station, my husband got up and went about taking pictures.  They had an open car were you could stand and see everthing around you.  The sun was bright, perfect for picture taking.

Except for my husband, it was everyone's first train ride. It seems very noisy at first, but then you get use to the rhythm of the tracks.

The open car was a good place to get a dark sun tan.

Some one got very creative with a dead tree. It was out there in the middle of nowhere. A technicolor tree.

When he was little he traveled from Eagle Pass, TX to Los Angeles, Ca. with his parents. After the train ride we went to a Mexican restaurant. Rogelio wanted to go there because they had a buffet. I dind't want to eat at a buffet, but was out voted by Luis and Rogelio. Dora abstained from voting. Well the food was very good. They had mole, menudo, arroz, etc. and a woman making corn tortillas. After we ate and a long discussion between the pilot and the nevigator we decided to go to Chimayo.

Chimayo church - I had seen a story about this town on the Travel Channel. We decided to look it up while in New Mexico. It is an old church. I bought some St. Christopher charms and the prist blessed them for me.

This is the entrance to the small courtyard in front of the church.

This is the front of the church. There is a small pit in the floor inside the church where you can get holy sand from. I got some to take home. You never know when you may needed it.

My husband took this picture. He is always looking for a good background. He says it makes the person stand out more. And yes, I do have my Marine T-shirt on. I have one for just about every day of the week. I have three Marines.
Many people come here to make promises and ask for miracles. They leave gifts and candles. I also lit a candle for Carlos so he would be safe in Japan. This was at the entrance to the church grounds. I don't know why they are there. There was nothing explaining them. The whole area has a kind of spooky feeling to it. I don't think I would want to be there at night.
The storms were always present in the far distance. They would start developing early in the morning, big blue and white clouds, growning bigger and bigger and finally crashing against the hills far away. We drove through the town of Romo and saw the cemetery. We had to stop and explore.
Camel Rock. It sure looks like one. We were already heading back to Santa Fe. It doesn't look like it is late in the afternoon, but it was. We made back to Santa Fe at 08:00 PM and broke our first rule! We stopped at a Wendy's to get some fast food. We were too tired to go to a regular restaurant. I had a salad just to avoid the hamburger. My husband and Dora jumped into the pool at the hotel while I read and Rogelio talked on the phone. We heard some loud fireworks in the distance and then remembered that it was the fourth of July. My birthday!
My husband will add a few more pages with pictures of our road trip. There are too many to put in this few pages. He will probably start another site just to have enough memory for the website. He will also be deleting some of the old pages to make room for some new one. I will talk to you later. Bye for now.
