New Mexico Trip 2006

New Mexico Trip 2006

Its been an extremely busy summer for me, too many trips!

My husband took over 1400 pictures during our seven day trip.  We traveled with my sister-in-law and brother-in-law.  We started planning the trip in April, then in June my husband was asked if he wanted to go to a management school at Boston University in Boston.  This is one of the best police management schools in the country and he couldn't pass up on the opportunity.  He was there three weeks.  My sister-in-law, Dora, was hired as an Instructional Specialist at the school I work at in the middle of June.  She left for Miami the last week of June for a week of training.  My brother-in-law, Rogelio, left for Las Vegas the last week of June on vacation.  My husband got home on June 30, Dora also got home on the same day and Rogelio flew into San Antonio on July 1, drove to Eagle Pass, then Drove to Waco.  We left for New Mexico on July 2.  I was the only one at home the week prior to us taking this trip.  Don't feel bad for me, I had already visited Eagle Pass, Kermit, and Lubbock in May and June.

Waking up in New Mexico

Our first night was spent in Ruidoso.  We got there pretty late and ate a Greek restaurant.  It was the only place that was open.  The food was very good.  We had all agreed that we would avoid eating in any place that sold hamburgers.  This was a grown ups trip!

Strolling in Carizozo

We left Ruidoso enroute to Santa Fe.  Our first stop was in a little town called Carizozo.  We were kind of just wondering around and came up on the old section of town.  The night before Rogelio had bought some root beer at the Greek restaurant and we just happened to find the place were they brew it.  He bought some more here.  My husband liked the bright color on the wall and got his camera out, worked on the settings and then handed it to Rogelio to take a picture of us walking next to the wall.

Getting some ice cream at Roy's

It was already way past noon and we were hungry.  We couldn't find a real restaurant to eat at. We found this drug store, ok, it had been a drug store, but they still had the soda fountain and still sold ice cream.  Very good ice cream, low in calories, fat free, etc.... Ok, I am lying, but it sure was good.

Roy's

This is the exterior, we spoke to the owner and he was nice enought to give us a tour of the downstairs and the history of the building.  It was interesting to hear about where the glass cabinets had come from.  We also found out that the top floor had originally been a hospital for this small town.  We got directions from him to a restaurant at the edge out town and we had lunch there.  He also told us of another small town, White Oaks, close by with a historic cemetery and some well preserved old buildings.  We decided to make that our next stop.

A Van Morrison fan

Yes someone named their homestead, "Moondance"!  Dora and I are big Van Morrison fans.  I think I have three or four of his CDs and Moondance is our favorite song.

Moondance

Well, its a marvelous night for a moondance
With the stars up above in your eyes
A fantabulous night to make romance
neath the cover of october skies
And all the leaves on the trees are falling
To the sound of the breezes that blow
And Im trying to please to the calling
Of your heart-strings that play soft and low
And all the nights magic seems to whisper and hush
And all the soft moonlight seems to shine in your blush

Can I just have one a more moondance with you, my love
Can I just make some more romance with a-you, my love

Well, I wanna make love to you tonight
I cant wait til the morning has come
And I know that the time is just right
And straight into my arms you will run
And when you come my heart will be waiting
To make sure that youre never alone
There and then all my dreams will come true, dear
There and then I will make you my own
And every time I touch you, you just tremble inside
And I know how much you want me that you cant hide

Billy the Kid's handy work.

This sheriff was killed by Billy the kid.  We also found a grave for Zane Gray Lesslie, and the picture on the tomb stone sure looked like the author.

Like many of other old cemetery, this one was segregated too.  The Spanish last names were found in the upper right hand corner of the cemetery.
